Pete Contee is a wanna be. He wanted to be cool like his older brother - so he started skipping class. He wanted to be respected, so he started drinking and experimenting with drugs at a young age. He wanted to be popular, so he hacked the bullies Facebook account and made him come out to his Christian family and youth group. He wants superpowers - and god damn it he's going to get them.

Orphaned at a young age, Peter Contee always tries to look on the bright side. He's an outsider and a bit of a loner, but he can be a team player when the score is big enough.

He was a repeat offender until he turned 13. His older brother ran with a few local gangs until he was arrested for attempted murder and put in for 40 years. At first Pete tried to follow in his foot steps, but his aunt and his brother himself in short yearly visits talked him out of it. He took all his skills in crime and decided he should learn how to hack. He'd just read Neal Stephenson for the first time - just go with it.

When his grandmother passed away and he had to move in with his police officer aunt, who straightened him out quick. She bought him a computer, and he learned how to make it sing. He still has it - a very old, very loud Sony VAIO - and it's still making him a force to be reckoned with online. He's starting to gain a blackhat reputation these days, but daylights as a wage slave for a small cyber security firm.

Most hours of the day, Pete is mild-mannered, socially awkward, and bored man. He wakes up, eats, works, goes to school, and works out. That's about it. But come the night time, he adopts the alias of backslash_backlash, a morally ambivalent hacktivist with a streak of vengeance and more than a little lust for fame.

In high school, he met Robyn Lavoie and Scott Reeds. They were originally members of an online clan together in a semi-popular MUX game, and after frequent online hijinks agreed to meet up. Lo and behold, they all lived in Lotus City! So Scott met his two new buddies, Robyn gained two flunkies who were just happy a girl noticed them, and Pete got the first real friends he'd ever had besides a key board, monitor, and bottle of cocoa butter-scented lotion.

They are his only friends IRL. He likes them very much. While Robyn is clearly the leader of the group and came up with their current scheme for superpowerdom, and Scott is mostly just along for the ride, Pete believes it is his humanist, manifest destiny to gain powers for the good of mankind. And he will not let something feeble and fickle like human mores stop them from getting their powers.

Pete studies computer science and electrical engineering at Lotus City Community College, paying for it with his programming job and his occasional illegal vigilante acts as a blackhat. He is a brown belt in World Oyama karate, but he almost never mentions it.

Pete is quiet, reserved, and mostly shy. In another place, he'd be called an otaku, but here, he's just a weirdo.

He rarely speaks unless among Robyn or Scott, and even then, it's mostly wry humor and trying to seem like he knows what he's talking about. He doesn't.

Pete likes 90s video games, classic rock, and science fiction movies. Mainly, he just tries to focus on what his life will be like in five years, and seems to miss what's right in front of his eyes unless its being projected by a liquid crystal display.
